The Chainsmokers & Halsey’s “Closer” Stays #1 On US iTunes Sales Chart After VMAs

The song that held a dominant lead going into the MTV Video Music Awards remains the clear leader after the show.

The Chainsmokers’ “Closer (featuring Halsey)” is still #1 on the US iTunes sales chart, and it is still outselling the #2 song by a factor of more than 2:1.

Halsey joined The Chainsmokers to perform the song during Sunday’s VMAs ceremony.

Britney Spears’ “Make Me (featuring G-Eazy),” which entered the show as the #3 song on iTunes, is #2 as of 10:25AM ET. Spears and G-Eazy performed the song on Sunday’s VMA broadcast, compounding the momentum that had been generated from a discounted price point, the release of Spears’ “Glory” album and exposure on Thursday’s “Late Late Show With James Corden.”

twenty one pilots’ “Heathens” is presently #3 on the chart, while Charlie Puth’s “We Don’t Talk Anymore (featuring Selena Gomez)” (#4) and Major Lazer’s “Cold Water (featuring Justin Bieber & MØ)” (#5) complete the Top 5. None of the three songs was featured during Sunday’s VMA ceremony.

Among songs that were featured, Lukas Graham’s #8 “Mama Said” is the next-highest-ranking. The Danish band performed the song, which was #10 prior to the broadcast, during the VMA pre-show.

Featured in a Video Music Awards-themed GEICO commercial, Daya’s “Sit Still, Look Pretty” is #9 on iTunes. Its ranking is unchanged but its relative placement differs; it has moved ahead of Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling” but behind the Lukas Graham tune.
