“Sausage Party” Wins Friday Box Office, “Suicide Squad” To Win Weekend; “Pete’s Dragon” #3

R-rated animated comedy “Sausage Party” impressively claimed the top spot at the Friday US box office, but “Suicide Squad” should move ahead as the weekend progresses.

The former earned $13.5 million Friday, besting the $13.4 million earned by “Suicide Squad.”

Expected to be a more front-loaded performer this weekend, “Sausage Party” will likely post a three-day total in the $30-36 million range. “Suicide Squad” should net somewhere in the $38-46 million range in its second weekend of release.

That is not to say the second weekend “Suicide Squad” performance should be lauded. Even if it lands at $46 million – the high-point of that range – it would be down 66% from last week’s total. Such a decline – especially without the introduction of new, blockbuster competition – suggests the poor reviews did have a negative impact.

— As for Friday, new release “Pete’s Dragon” took third with $7.0 million. It is poised for a weekend in the $18-23 million range.

“Jason Bourne” was fourth with $3.9 million (en route to $11-15 million this weekend), while “Bad Moms” was fifth with $3.6 million (and should earn $9-13 million by the end of Sunday).

“Florence Foster Jenkins,” which launched on just over 1500 screens, earned $2.1 million Friday. It should clear $6 million this weekend.
