“The Conjuring 2” Wins Weekend Box Office, “Warcraft” Edges “Now You See Me 2” For #2

“The Conjuring 2” outpaced fellow new releases “Warcraft” and “Now You See Me 2” — and all other new releases — to claim #1 at the US box office this weekend.

According to studio estimates, the horror sequel will earn $40.4 million in domestic receipts this weekend. Down only slightly from the $41.9 million earned by its 2013 predecessor, the gross keeps “The Conjuring 2” comfortably ahead of the pack.

“Warcraft” will take #2 this weekend with $24.4 million. “Now You See Me 2,” which will earn about $23.0 million, will debut at #3.

2013’s “Now You See Me” grossed $29.4 million in its first three days.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows,” last week’s winner, slips to #4 with $14.8 million this weekend. It was down 58.1% from last weekend’s performance.

“X-Men: Apocalypse” settles for fifth with $10.0 million.
