While nowhere near as hot as 2014’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” new release “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows” still comfortably won the US weekend box office race.
Studio estimates say “Out Of The Shadows” will close the weekend with about $35.3 million in receipts. Down from the $65.6 million earned by the predecessor, the tally still positions “Out Of The Shadows” nearly $13 million ahead of the weekend’s #2 film.
“X-Men: Apocalypse,” that film, added $22.3 million to its haul this weekend. Since opening over Memorial Day Weekend, “Apocalypse” has generated $116.5 million in receipts.
New release “Me Before You” earns #3 with a solid $18.3 million, besting the $10.7 million earned by #4 film “Alice Through The Looking Glass.” A weekend gross of $9.8 million slots “The Angry Birds Movie” at #5.
“Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” the third of this week’s three wide new releases, flopped with just $4.6 million in its inaugural frame. It takes #8 on the weekend leaderboard.
