“Zootopia” Tops “10 Cloverfield Lane” At Friday Box Office; “Brothers Grimsby” Flops

The strongest new release was unable to defeat the reigning champion at this Friday’s US box office.

“Zootopia,” which debuted at #1 last weekend, led this Friday’s race with $12.0 million. New release “10 Cloverfield Lane” earned $9.0 million in opening day receipts.

Since the family-skewing “Zootopia” will post strong weekend matinee numbers, its lead is expected to grow as the weekend progresses. The critically acclaimed animated film will thus earn a second weekend as the US box office’s #1 film.

“London Has Fallen” (#3, $3.0 million), “Deadpool” (#4, $3.0 million), and “The Perfect Match” (#5, $1.6 million) completed Friday’s Top 5.

“The Perfect Match” is a new release; it launched on 925 screens. Fellow newcomer “The Young Messiah” is #6 with $1.4 million in Friday receipts from 1,761 theaters.

Also new, “The Brothers Grimsby” flopped in its first day of release. The film, which ran on 2,235 screens, earned just $1.2 million at the Friday box office. It was the day’s #8 film.
