Overnight Oscars Ratings: 88th Annual Academy Awards Down From Last Year’s Show

Update: Time-adjusted fast national data reveals that Sunday’s 88th Annual Academy Awards ceremony drew a 10.4 adults 18-49 rating and 34.3 million viewers.

The numbers, which trail the 11.0 rating and 37.3 million viewer mark drawn by last year’s broadcast, represent eight-year lows.

Preliminary ratings data suggests a year-over-year decline for the 88th Annual Academy Awards broadcast.

Per Nielsen’s metered market ratings report, Sunday’s 210-minute ceremony drew a 23.1 overnight household rating. While that maintains the show’s standing as one of the year’s biggest television events, it trails the 24.6 drawn by last year’s ceremony, which was itself an underwhelming performer.

It also ranks as the ceremony’s lowest overnight household rating since 2008.

While there is no guarantee the show also fell from last year – let alone hit an eight year low – in adults 18-49 and total viewership, there is no reason to believe this year’s show was a particularly strong performer in those columns.

Time-adjusted adults 18-49 and total viewership data is due Monday afternoon.
