Sam Smith’s “Writing’s On The Wall” Wins Best Original Song at the Oscars

Moments before the 88th Annual Academy Awards revealed the winner for Best Original Song, Lady Gaga delivered an emotionally poignant rendition of her nominated “Til It Happens To You.”

The performance only amplified the expectation that the composition, which appears in “The Hunting Ground,” would be named the Oscar-winner for Best Original Song.

That expectation was subverted, however, when “Spectre” song “Writing’s On The Wall” was named the victor.

The track, which was written by Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes and performed by Smith, also bested “Earned It,” “Simple Song #3,” and “Manta Ray.”

— In other music-related Oscars news, “The Hateful Eight” won for Best Original Score.
