“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Remains #1 at Box Office, “Hateful Eight” Improves To #3

Another monstrous weekend total earns “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” a third straight weekend box office victory.

Per studio estimates, “Star Wars” will grab $88.3 million this weekend. Down a modest 41% from last week’s Christmas-boosted tally, the mark easily ranks as the weekend’s best.

It also brings the film’s cumulative US total to $740.3 million. Only about $20 million shy of the “Avatar” gross, “Star Wars” is on track to break the all-time record this week.

With $29.0 million in weekend receipts, “Daddy’s Home” repeats as the #2 film.

“The Hateful Eight,” which expanded into 2,474 theaters this weekend, rises to #3 with $16.2 million. “Sisters” (#4, $12.6 million) and “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” (#5, $11.8 million) complete the Top 5.
