iTunes gift cards represent popular stocking stuffers. And insofar as many recipients are quick to redeem those gifts, many songs receive Christmas Day sales boosts on iTunes.
Since Adele’s dominant “Hello” benefited from that redemption activity, it retained its #1 spot on the US iTunes single sales chart — and actually widened its lead over the runner-up.
That runner-up is now Justin Bieber’s “Sorry,” which overtook Bieber’s own “Love Yourself” thanks to a greater level of Christmas Day interest. Drake’s “Hotline Bling” follows at #4, while twenty one pilots’ “Stressed Out” (#5) and Selena Gomez’ “Same Old Love” (#6) most closely follow. While the songs slightly shifted positions, all three were positioned prominently on Christmas Eve.
A more visible beneficiary of the Christmas Day rush was Shawn Mendes’ “Stitches.” The song, which was #16 late on the evening of December 23 and #12 late on Christmas Eve, is up to #7 as of 11PM ET on Christmas Day.
Mendes also has a notable gainer in “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” his collaboration with Camila Cabello. The song, which ended Christmas Eve in the #26 position, ends Christmas Day at #15.
Fetty Wap’s “679 (featuring Monty)” has also enjoyed a visible rise. “679” was #20 forty eight hours ago. It was #16 twenty four hours ago. It is now #8 on the all-genre chart.
Christmas Day brought Drake & Future’s “Jumpman” back into the Top 10. The song, which jwas #27 on the night of 12/23 and #18 on Christmas Eve, is now #10.
Up seven places from its Christmas Eve position, One Direction’s “Perfect” is presently #13. iLoveMemphis’ “Hit The Quan” has rocketed twenty five places to #19, while Post Malone’s “White Iverson” is up seven to #20.
