Adele’s “25” Wins Album Sales Race With 1.11 Million In Week 2; Also Tops BB200 (Updated)

Update 2: A second week total of 1.11 million US sales allows Adele’s “25” to remain #1 on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart.

The tally, which brings the album’s US cume to 4.49 million, reflects another unprecedented feat for the record-breaking album.

After moving a record 3.38 million last week and now 1.11 million this week, “25” becomes the first album (since Soundscan tracking began in 1991) to sell at least 1 million copies in two separate weeks.

With Track Equivalent Albums (track sales/10) and Streaming Equivalent Albums (track streams/1500) added to the pure sales total, “25” generated 1.16 million consumption units during the November 27-December 3 tracking week. That allows the album to retain the top spot on the Billboard 200.

The top 10 is as follows:

1) Adele – 25 – 1.16 million units (1.11 million from pure sales)
2) Justin Bieber – Purpose – 211K units
3) Pentatonix – That’s Christmas to Me – 94K units
4) One Direction – Made In The AM – 82K units
5) Taylor Swift – 1989 – 60K units
6) The Weeknd – Beauty Behind The Madness – 60K units
7) Carrie Underwood – Storyteller – 48K units
8) Fetty Wap – Fetty Wap – 47K units
9) Michael Buble – Christmas – 41K units
10) NOW 56 – 40K units (40K from sales)
=====================

Update: According to Nielsen Music, Adele’s “25” sold a whopping 1.11 million US copies during the November 27-December 3 tracking period, which marked its second week of release.

In doing so, it became the first album since Soundscan tracking commenced in 1991 to sell over a million copies in two separate weeks.

Last week, the album debuted with a record 3.38 million first week sales.

In addition to bringing the album’s cume to a monstrous 4.49 million, the 1.11 million second-week figure allows “25” to retain its top spot on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart.

It will also retain its top spot on the consumption-oriented Billboard 200. More details on that chart, which ranks albums based on the combination of pure sales, Track Equivalent Albums (track sales/10) and Streaming Equivalent Albums (track streams/1500), will emerge Sunday.
========================

Last week, Adele’s “25” sold a record 3.38 million US copies.

This week, it appears to have achieved another unprecedented feat for the Soundscan era: it sold over 1 million copies in a second tracking week.

According to Hits Daily Double’s preliminary sales report, “25” sold approximately 1,021,588 copies during the November 27-December 3 tracking week.

Due later this weekend, Billboard’s more authoritative sales figure will differ slightly from that reported by Hits. Insiders are confident, however, that Billboard’s number will also exceed 1 million.

The 1.021 million second week figure is obviously enough for a second stint at #1 on the album sales chart.

With Track Equivalent Albums (10 single sales = 1 unit) and Streaming Equivalent Albums (1500 single streams = 1 unit) added to the pure sales total, Hits estimates “25” generated 1,065,741 total weekly consumption units. That will be enough for #1 on the consumption-oriented Billboard 200 chart.

Other notable pure sales performers: Justin Bieber’s “Purpose” (~141,057 sales), Pentatonix’s “That’s Christmas To Me” (~75,996 sales), One Direction’s “Made In The AM” (~67,200 sales), Taylor Swift’s “1989” (~51,391 sales), Carrie Underwood’s “Storyteller” (~47,456 sales).

Other notable consumption performers: “Purpose” (~220,363 units), “Made In The AM” (~88,084 units), “That’s Christmas To Me” (~83,345 units), The Weeknd’s “Beauty Behind The Madness” (~60,952 units), Taylor Swift’s “1989” (~59,993 units).
