“Goosebumps” Narrowly Bests “The Martian” at Box Office; “Bridge of Spies,” “Crimson Peak” Debut

It was not a smash, but “Goosebumps” managed to claim victory at the weekend box office.

Studio estimates say that “Goosebumps” earned $23.5 million in its first weekend of release. “The Martian,” which spent the previous two weeks at #1, slips to #2 on the strength of its $21.5 million in weekend receipts.

New releases “Bridge of Spies” (#3, $15.4 million) and “Crimson Peak” (#4, $12.9 million) follow, while “Hotel Transylvania 2” completes the Top 5. The film, which was #2 last week, grossed $12.3 million this week.

“Woodlawn,” the week’s other notable new release, starts at #9. It earned an estimated $4.1 million from its 1,553 screens.
