“The Martian” Again Wins Weekend Box Office, “Pan” Disappoints, “Steve Jobs” Begins

The combination of strong retention and a disappointing performance from the big new release allowed “The Martian” to score a second straight victory at the weekend box office.

“The Martian,” which debuted at #1 last week, earned an estimated $37.0 million this weekend. Down by only 32% from last week’s mark, the tally allows “Martian” to retain its throne.

It also brought the film’s cume past $100 million — and to $108.7 million.

“Hotel Transylvania 2” again followed at #2; it grossed approximately $20.3 million.

“Pan,” the only high-profile new release, debuted at #3. It grossed a disappointing $15.5 million from 3,515 screens.

“The Intern” (#4, $8.7 million) and “Sicario” (#5, $7.4 million) complete the Top 5.

— On the platform front, new release “Steve Jobs” earned a healthy $521,000 from 4 screens. It goes wide later this month.
