Ratings: FOX’s “Empire” Season 2 Premiere Obliterates Competition (Updated)

Final Ratings Update: FOX’s season two “Empire” premiere drew a mammoth 6.7 adults 18-49 rating with 16.18 million total viewers.

The episode was by far television’s highest-rated and most-watched program Wednesday.

Among “Empire” episodes, only the second half of the two-hour first season finale posted stronger numbers (6.9, 17.62 million). If one treats last season’s finale as a singular, two-hour episode, this Wednesday’s season two finale was actually the stronger performer in adults 18-49.

Across its two hours, the first season “Empire” finale drew a 6.5 adults 18-49 rating with 16.72 million total viewers.

FOX led into “Empire” with the series premiere of “Rosewood” (2.4, 7.54 million).

Fast National Update: The second season “Empire” premiere was by far network television’s top-rated and most-watched program.

Per fast national data, Wednesday’s episode drew a 6.5 adults 18-9 rating with 16.02 million viewers.

Its adults 18-49 rating more than doubles that of the nearest competitor. ABC’s “Modern Family,” that competitor, posted a 3.1 (with 9.26 million viewers).

Among “Empire” episodes, only the second hour of last season’s finale fared better (6.9, 17.62 million).

FOX led into “Empire” with the series premiere of “Rosewood” (2.4, 7.36 million viewers).

========================

To the surprise of no one, FOX’s “Empire” dominated the Wednesday night ratings race.

Per metered market data, Wednesday’s second season premiere posted a stellar 10.4 overnight household rating. That number essentially placed “Empire” in its own league.

The night’s next-best marks came from ABC’s “Modern Family” season premiere (6.4) and FOX’s own “Rosewood” series premiere (5.9).

The “Empire” number was even with that posted by the 8PM portion of the two-hour season one finale. In terms of first season “Empire” episodes, only the second hour of that finale (11.2) posted a stronger overnight household rating.

“Empire”‘s January 2015 first season premiere posted a 6.8 household rating.

Sure to be massive in their own rights, the adults 18-49 rating and total viewership mark will be issued by 11:15AM ET.
