Over the past few weeks, three singles from Taylor Swift’s blockbuster “1989” earned upgraded multi-platinum certifications.
The first wave of certifications came on August 25. That date brought news that Swift’s second “1989” single “Blank Space” went 7x platinum in the US. Fourth single “Bad Blood” went 3X platinum on the same date.
The RIAA then issued two more digital certifications on September 15. Swift’s lead “1989” single “Shake It Off” received an 8X platinum certification, while “Bad Blood” was upgraded to 4X platinum.
Swift’s first four “1989” singles — the aforementioned, plus the 2x platinum “Style” — are all multi-platinum. Current single “Wildest Dreams” is currently gold and surely on track for a platinum — if not a multi-platinum — certification in the near future.
Under the terms of the RIAA’s digital singles program, each platinum certification confirms a US unit total of 1 million. One unit is equal to one paid download or 100 streams.
