“Straight Outta Compton” Again Wins Box Office; “Sinister 2,” “Hitman,” “American Ultra” Disappoint

While its 44% second weekend retention was nothing about which to write home (and actually quite low given the strong reviews), “Straight Outta Compton” still managed to retain its weekend box office crown.

The film earned an estimated $26.8 million during its second weekend of release. Enough to bring the film’s cume across the $100 million mark (to $111.5 million), the weekend gross also gave “Compton” an easy victory.

“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” again the #2 film, followed distantly with $11.7 million. Its cume is now $157.8 million.

Third for the weekend, “Sinister 2” represented one of three disappointing new entries. It grossed a modest $10.6 million in its inaugural weekend. Fellow newcomer “Hitman: Agent 47” takes fourth on the strength of a soft $8.2 million, while “American Ultra” lands at #6 courtesy its poor $5.5 million gross.

“The Man from UNCLE” grabs #3 courtesy a weekend haul of $7.4 million.
