“American Ultra” Flops at Friday Box Office; “Compton” Also Tops “Sinister 2,” “Hitman”

Few doubted “Straight Outta Compton” would top the Friday box office en route to a second straight weekend victory.

Most, however, expected the new crop of films to put up a stronger fight than they did.

“Sinister 2,” “Hitman: Agent 47” and “American Ultra” all fell dramatically short of Friday’s “Compton” mark. The lattermost film debuted with a particularly weak number.

Enough for only #6 on the Friday box office chart, “Ultra” managed a mere $2.1 million. It is not even expected to cross the $6 million mark by the end of the weekend.

“Sinister 2” (#2, $4.7 million) and “Hitman” (#4, $3.1 million) also trailed “Straight Outta Compton,” which led the Friday box office with $8.3 million. On track for a weekend in the high-$20 millions, “Compton” will easily cross the $100 million cumulative mark by weekend’s end.

“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” (#3, $3.3 million) and “The Man from UNCLE” (#5, $2.2 million) also landed in the top 5 on Friday.
