Leona Lewis’ “Thunder” Approaches Hot AC’s Top 40; Sales Fall 74%

By nearly doubling its weekly airplay, Leona Lewis’ “Thunder” moved closer to the Top 40 of Mediabase’s hot adult contemporary chart.

The song received 317 Hot AC spins during the official August 2-8 tracking week. That count, which bested the previous week’s mark by a healthy 158 spins, was the Mediabase Hot AC panel’s 42nd-greatest.

“Thunder” ranked as the prior week’s #50 song.

Insofar as it is still gaining airplay, Lewis’ new single is expected to claim a Top 40 spot on this coming week’s official airplay chart. Mediabase’s building chart supports that notion; with two of the tracking period’s seven days completed, “Thunder” currently ranks as the format’s #39 song.

— While “Thunder” improved radio presence this past week, it suffered a significant – albeit expected – sales drop.

The song, which drove 2,225 paid downloads during its first week of availability, sold what Nielsen Music reports as 579 copies during the July 31-August 6 tracking week. That represents a decline of 74%.
