“Minions” Easily Claims #1 at Box Office, “Self/Less” Bombs

With a total that exceeds its nearest competitor’s mark by a multiple of greater than 6x, “Minions” easily claims #1 at the weekend box office.

Based on studio estimates, “Minions” earned $115.2 million during its first weekend of release. Comfortably better than the opening week totals generated by “Despicable Me” and “Despicable Me 2,” it also obliterates the $18.1 million earned by #2 film “Jurassic World.”

“Inside Out,” which claimed victory at last weekend’s box office, slips to #3 on the strength of its $17.1 million. “Terminator: Genisys” ($13.7 million) and modest new release “The Gallows” ($10.0 million) claim the next two respective Top 5 slots.

New release “Self/Less” did not start nearly as well as “The Gallows,” let alone “Minions.” The flop ranks #8 thanks to a mere $5.4 million in receipts.
