Over the past few months, Tori Kelly has repeatedly delivered captivating television performances. By demonstrating her emotional connection and soaring vocals, each has contributed to the amplification of her profile.
Amid a sea of strong showings, the singer-songwriter’s Thursday morning performnace on “The View” might have been the strongest yet.
Keeping with her usual trend, Kelly performed a stripped, acoustic-driven rendition of current radio single “Should’ve Been us.” Keeping with her usual trend, she made a case for being considered one of mainstream music’s elite vocalists.
What separated this from some of Kelly’s other showings, however, was a previously unmatched combination of confidence, rhythmic competency and vocal dynamics.
She worked the stage – and song – like a legitimate superstar. In the spirit of Ed Sheeran, she worked the rhythmic pocket with more punch than is typical of a stripped, acoustic performance. And even though the song adheres to a fairly simple, straightforward melody, Tori Kelly somehow found immense room to show off the many facets of her voice. The final minute is as close to a classic vocal showing as one will realistically get on a show like “The View.”
The result was a performance that once again established Tori Kelly as a can’t-miss performer. Buyers have shown some hesitation when it comes to embracing her singles, but hesitation will doubtfully linger when it comes to embracing her ability.
