“Jurassic World” Conquers Box Office With #2 Weekend Ever

Everyone knew “Jurassic World” was going to be big. Only a handful correctly guessed that it would be “Avengers big.”

According to weekend estimates, “Jurassic World” grossed $204.6 million in its opening weekend. If that number holds, it will rank as the #2 opening weekend performance on record.

Only 2012’s “The Avengers,” which earned $207.4 million in its first weekend, got off to a hotter start. 2015 sequel “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” which analysts expected to score the summer’s biggest weekend, started with $191.3 million.

Thanks to “Jurassic World,” that now ranks as the #3 opening weekend.

The opening weekend take is by far the greatest for a “Jurassic Park” film. The 1993 original opened with $47.0 million; “The Lost World” (1997, $72.1 million) and “Jurassic Park III” (2001, $50.8 million) followed.

“Jurassic World” naturally obliterated the rest of this weekend’s competition. “Spy,” last week’s winner, followed with $16.0 million. “San Andreas” earned #3 on the strength of $11.0 million, while “Insidious Chapter 3” (#4, $7.3 million) and “Pitch Perfect 2” (#5, $6.0 million) competed the top five.
