The race came down to the wire, but Blake Shelton’s “Lonely Tonight (featuring Ashley Monroe)” ultimately got the job done. It claims the #1 position on this week’s Mediabase country radio chart.
The song, which is the second single from Shelton’s “Bringing Back the Sunshine,” earns the position courtesy a very narrow lead over Thomas Rhett’s “Make Me Wanna.” It becomes Shelton’s 19th career number one and extends a chart-topping streak (now 14 straight) that dates back to 2009’s “Hillbilly Bone.”
Not simply the leader in terms of Mediabase chart points, “Lonely Tonight” also ranks as the week’s most-played and most-heard song. According to Sunday’s Mediabase report, “Lonely” commanded 7,788 spins and 61.24 million audience impressions during the February 22-28 tracking week.
Thomas Rhett’s “Make Me Wanna,” which slips to #2 after topping last week’s chart, received 7,690 spins and 59.10 million audience impressions.
While the panels are not identical, the Mediabase impression victory bodes well for Shelton’s prospect of claiming a simultaneous #1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. That listing will be released Monday night.
As far as Mediabase goes, the week’s other top five songs include Randy Houser’s “Like a Cowboy” (#3), Jason Aldean’s “Just Gettin’ Started” (#4) and Brett Eldredge’s “Mean to Me” (#5).
