Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” Hits #1 at Hot AC, is Pop’s Greatest Gainer

Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” is now the #1 song at hot adult contemporary radio.

The song, which received 6,556 spins during the February 1-7 tracking week, usurps the throne from Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” on the official edition of Mediabase’s Hot AC airplay chart. The Hozier track, which rose to #1 last week, slips to #2 on the strength of its 6,494 spins.

— Sheeran’s song did not challenge Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk (featuring Bruno Mars)” for number one at pop radio, but it did enjoy a surge to the #2 position.

The song reaches #2 on Mediabase’s official pop radio airplay chart courtesy the format’s greatest airplay gain.

The recipient of 15,890 spins during the February 1-7 tracking week, “Thinking Out Loud” enjoyed a week-over-week spin gain of 2,607. No other song enjoyed a boost of more than 2,000 spins to its weekly airplay total.

Taylor Swift’s “Style,” the next greatest gainer, rises to #10 on the strength of its 7,954 weekly spins (+1,834). Maroon 5’s #14 “Sugar” (7,236 spins, +1,676), Pitbull’s #8 “Time of Our Lives” (8,970 spins, +1,577) and Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney’s #17 “FourFiveSeconds” (5,580, +1,370) also had good weeks.

A multi-format hit, “Thinking Out Loud” is also #10 at adult contemporary radio and #21 at rhythmic.
