Neither song conquered pop radio the way some hoped, but Vance Joy’s “Riptide” and Milky Chance’s “Stolen Dance” both ultimately proved resonant with the American music community.
By the end of January, the international–and then US alternative–crossovers had received platinum digital certifications from the RIAA.
Certified as platinum digital singles on January 29 and January 30, respectively, “Riptide” and “Stolen Dance” boast unit totals in excess of 1 million. A unit is equivalent to either one single purchase or 100 audio or visual streams.
The tracks were not the only alternative offerings to go platinum in January. The RIAA certified Of Monsters and Men’s “Mountain Sound,” which performed impressively at alternative radio and made a minor dent in the hot adult contemporary format, platinum on January 30.
Previously uncertified, “Mountain Sound” also received its gold distinction in January.
