“Mortdecai” Flops at Box Office, “American Sniper” Hits $200 Million

Yes, it is possible for a Johnny Depp film to open less successfully than his 2011 vehicle “The Rum Diary.”

“Mortdecai,” Depp’s latest, flopped with a mere $4.1 million in weekend box office receipts. Enough for a mere ninth place finish at the overall box office, the $4.1 million was the weakest gross for a major newcomer.

Fellow new release “The Boy Next Door” opened in second place with $15.0 million, while “Strange Magic” landed in seventh on the strength of $5.5 million.

Down only 28% from last weekend’s total, “American Sniper” led the weekend box office with a whopping $64.4 million. The tally was enough to thrust the cumulative “American Sniper” gross past the $200 mark (to an approximate total of $200.1 million) in just its second week of wide release.

“Paddington” (#3, $12.4 million), “The Wedding Ringer” (#4, $11.6 million) and “Taken 3” (#5, $7.6 million) landed in the weekend’s top five.
