After getting off to a solid start on January 4, ABC’s musical comedy “Galavant” took a massive hit against last week’s Golden Globe Awards broadcast.
This week’s pair of episodes, which faced competition from CBS’ broadcast of the AFC Championship game between the Patriots and Colts, endured another sizable fall.
Per fast national data, Sunday’s back-to-back “Galavant” episodes averaged a 0.9 adults 18-49 rating and 3.38 million viewers.
Compared to last week’s final numbers, the averages were down by 31% in the demo and 18% in total viewership.
Among the four major networks, ABC placed third during the 8PM hour. It trailed CBS’ football coverage and FOX’s combination of “The Simpsons” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” re-runs but bested NBC’s screening of “Bridesmaids.”
That the other networks opted not to broadcast originals underscores the significance of the AFC Championship competition. That a pair of FOX re-runs could outdraw “Galavant” in the adults 18-49 demographic, however, suggests that some of the blame for the performance lies with the show itself.
