“The Hanging Tree” Goes Top 20 as Pop’s Greatest Weekly Gainer

Ending the year like a bona fide monster, James Newton Howard’s “The Hanging Tree (featuring Jennifer Lawrence)” is already one of pop radio’s twenty most-played songs.

According to Mediabase, the song, which comes from “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,” commanded approximately 3,887 spins during the seven days between December 14 and 20. While no official chart will be published to certify the song’s position this week, the spin count does register as the pop format’s 20th-largest.

It also reflects a week-over-week spin gain of 2,403. No song’s weekly gain comes within 800 of that impressive boost.

Mark Ronson’s #12 “Uptown Funk (featuring Bruno Mars),” the week’s second-greatest gainer, enjoys a week-over-week boost of 1,569 (to a weekly total of 8,050). Other big gainers include Hozier’s #9 “Take Me to Church” (+1,431 to 9,244 weekly spins), Ariana Grande & The Weeknd’s #5 “Love Me Harder” (+1,426 to 12,719 weekly spins) and Sam Smith’s #8 “I’m Not the Only One” (+1,284 to 11,039 weekly spins).

“The Hanging Tree” is also faring well at hot adult contemporary. It rises into the Top 30 this week on the strength of ~879 weekly spins (+468).
