Last week, Taylor Swift celebrated her 25th birthday. Afforded a combination of endless media attention, enthusiastic fan support, public celebrity gushing and a parade of actual goods, Swift had an undeniably great week.
But Billboard now confirms that the week was better than originally anticipated. In addition to her birthday, this past week also housed the three millionth “1989” purchase.
Billboard reports that Taylor Swift’s “1989” grabs the #2 position on its album sales chart courtesy 278,000 sales. When added to the 2.726 million units that had been sold prior to last week, the weekly count produces a cumulative sum in excess of 3 million.
In addition to its 278,000 pure album sales, “1989” also received 46,000 credits from Track Equivalent Albums. The result is a Billboard 200 “unit” total of 324,000, which ranks second behind the 375,000 collected by J. Cole’s chart-topping “2014 Forest Hills Drive.” 354,000 of the J. Cole units are pure sales.
