Ratings: American Music Awards Down 16% This Year (Updated)

Update: Per fast national data, this year’s American Music Awards ceremony drew a 3.8 adults 18-49 rating for ABC. Save for adjustments in the final report, that would represent a year-over-year decline of 16% from the 4.5 garnered by last year’s show.

The fast national viewership average of 11.54 million trails last year’s final audience mark by 12%.

There is no guarantee it will also be down in the adults 18-49 and total viewership columns, but the 2014 American Music Awards telecast did slip in the overnight metered market ratings.

Sunday’s three-hour broadcast drew a 7.5 overnight household rating. That trails last year’s mark by 9%.

Like last year’s broadcast, this year’s ceremony faced intense competition. In addition to battling a high-profile Sunday Night Football game (Cowboys vs. Giants this year, Broncos vs. Patriots last year), the AMAs again dealt with AMC’s juggernaut “The Walking Dead.”

Adults 18-49 and total viewership data for the airing, which will provide a more important source of comparison to last year’s performance, is due by noon. ABC’s 2013 AMAs broadcast ended up drawing a 4.5 adults 18-49 rating with 13.14 million viewers.
