Ratings: The CW’s “Jane the Virgin” Opens Modestly (Updated)

Update: The CW’s “Jane the Virgin” opened with a 0.6 adults 18-49 rating and 1.63 million viewers.

An irrefutable improvement over The CW’s recent performances in the timeslot (and one that bests its lead-in in total viewers), it is nonetheless a fairly soft showing for a new series.

Earlier in the night, “The Originals” drew a 0.7 adults 18-49 rating with 1.34 million viewers.

=====================

Given how negatively television critics reacted when The CW first introduced the “Jane the Virgin” concept, they doubtfully had any hate remaining when they actually saw the pilot.

Indeed, the pilot received respectable reviews for its level of charm and for star Gina Rodriguez’ performance.

Unfortunately, that surge of positive buzz did not turn “Jane the Virgin” into a ratings force.

While there is a chance it ended up delivering in the adults 18-49 demographic, it did not wow in the overnight metered market ratings. Monday’s series premiere drew a soft 1.1 overnight household rating.

Up from lead-in “The Originals” (1.0) and from what The CW was regularly delivering in the competitive, “Voice”-occupied timeslot last year, it nonetheless reflects a small household audience. And it pales in comparison to the monstrous 3.4 delivered by last week’s “The Flash” premiere (granted, no one expected it to rival that number).

Adults 18-49 and total viewership numbers, which will provide a better window into the show’s performance quality, are due shortly.
