While it might not be remembered for “Centuries,” Fall Out Boy’s new single is far from a forgettable tune.
Featuring the punchy, anthemic energy that drove comeback hit “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark,” and the theatrical vibe that has long distinguished Fall Out Boy from the balance of the pop-punk crowd, “Centuries” should have no issue finding an instant audience.
Compelling enough in pieces, the totality of the production is bolstered by the sampling of the recognizable hook from Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner.” Functioning as both a line intro and the foundation of the song’s central chant, the “Tom’s Diner” carry-over adds a layer of memorability to an already resonant tune.
