“Guardians of the Galaxy” Stays #1 at Weekend Box Office, “Identical” Flops

Facing no notable challengers this week, new or old, “Guardians of the Galaxy” retained its box office crown.

With $10.2 million in receipts, the film also put itself within striking distance of the $300 million mark. Already highest-grossing film of 2014, “Guardians” now claims a cumulative gross of $294.5 million.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “If I Stay” repeated in second and third with respective takes of $6.5 million and $5.8 million. “Let’s Be Cops” improved to #4 with an additional $5.4 million in business, while “The November Man” was good for $4.2 million in week two.

Other top ten finishers: “As Above/So Below” (#6, $3.7 million), “When the Game Stands Tall” (#7, $3.7 million), “The Giver” (#8, $3.6 million), “The Hundred-Foot Journey” (#9, $3.2 million), “Lucy” (#10, $2.0 million).

“The Identical,” the lone major new release, flopped with just $1.9 million. It ranked eleventh for the weekend.
