Taylor Swift Confirms New Album “1989,” Calls Album “Pop”

Five minutes into her live stream, Taylor Swift predictably debuted new single “Shake it Off.”

At 5:12PM, she just as predictably revealed the identity of her fifth studio album: “1989.”

The title, which references Swift’s birth year, also references the era that inspired what the singer-songwriter claims is “the most sonically cohesive album I’ve ever made.”

Upon waking up “not wanting but needing to make a new style of music,” Swift revealed on her Yahoo! Live Stream that she found comfort in late-80s pop. That helped to inform her new style, and the result is a fifth album that is her “favorite” full-length to date.

In addition to revealing the identity of her new album, Swift also declared that it is her first bona fide “pop” album. While Swift’s departure from the confines of country has been music’s most obvious transition, Monday’s Yahoo! live stream represented the first time she had formally given her music the “pop” classification.

“1989” hits shelves on October 27.
