“TMNT” Wins Box Office Again, “Let’s Be Cops” Tops “Expendables 3”

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” did not demonstrate a particularly remarkable retention rate, but insofar as it faced no blockbuster competition, it had no trouble clinging to the #1 spot at the weekend box office.

“TMNT” led the weekend with an estimated $28.4 million in receipts. A drop of 57% from last week’s haul, the gross was nonetheless enough to lead “Turtles” past the $100 million mark. Its cumulative gross is now $117.6 million.

“Guardians of the Galaxy,” which crossed the $200 million mark this weekend, did so thanks to $24.7 million in new business. Its total stands at $222.3 million.

By landing at the high end of forecasts, “Let’s Be Cops” bested fellow newcomers “The Expendables 3” and “The Giver” for the third place slot. “Cops” earned $17.7 this weekend, which results in a five-day launch total of $26.1 million. Analysts were eyeing a $25 million over those five days.

“The Expendables 3” took fourth with a paltry $16.2 million in receipts. A major disappointment, the total is less than half of that drawn by 2010’s “The Expendables” ($34.8 million) and significantly less than that earned by 2012’s “The Expendables 2” ($28.6 million).

New release “The Giver” claimed fifth with $12.8 million.
