Fueled by a potent combination of growing airplay and the release of its buzzworthy music video, Iggy Azalea’s “Black Widow (featuring Rita Ora)” has surged into the Top 5 on iTunes’ overall single sales chart.
As of press time, the follow-up to Azalea’s multi-week #1 “Fancy” is #4 on the iTunes chart. Only Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass,” Jessie J + Ariana Grande + Nicki Minaj’s “Bang Bang” and Ariana Grande’s “Break Free (featuring Zedd)” are selling at a faster rate.
MAGIC!’s “Rude,” meanwhile, claims the final spot in the top 5.
While the song will only grow its exposure–and momentum–in the coming days and weeks, the challenge of getting to #1 will be a daunting one. At press time, Meghan Trainor’s “Bass” is selling more than twice as quickly as “Black Widow” and is showing no willingness to cede its top spot to any existing release.
It will lose the spot next week, but it will do so to Taylor Swift’s new single, which is expected to be a digital sales behemoth and thus an even more intimidating foe for Azalea’s “Black Widow.”
But with plenty of time to garner additional support from radio, a video that is generating enthusiasm and a high-profile appearance at next Sunday’s VMAs, Azalea has no reason to believe “Black Widow” will fail to establish itself as a major hit.
