“Guardians” Wins Album Sales Race, The Vamps EP Goes Top 10

The soundtrack to “Frozen” is not the only one capable of hitting #1 in 2014.

Fueled by an 83% increase to 109,000 weekly sales, “Guardians of the Galaxy”‘s “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” claims number one on the Billboard 200 album sales chart. Like former multi-week number one “Frozen,” the “Guardians” album was released by Disney.

Not since 2009, in which releases for “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” and “Michael Jackson’s This is It” all reached the top, have multiple soundtracks hit #1 within a calendar year.

The new NOW 51 release claims second place on the strength of 94,000 sales. Godsmack’s fellow newcomer “1000hp” follows with sales of 58,000 and a third place bow.

Spoon claims #4 with “They Want My Soul” (39,000), while Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “Hypnotic Eye” slips to #5 with sales of 34,000.

Other top ten releases: 5 Seconds of Summer’s “5 Seconds of Summer” (36,000, #6), Eric Clapton and Friends’ “The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale” (29,000, #7), the aforementioned “Frozen” soundtrack (28,000, #8), Sam Smith’s “In the Lonely Hour” (27,000, #9) and The Vamps’ new “Somebody to You” EP (20,000, #10).
