A music video trend that recently emerged at pop (via videos like J-Lo’s “I Luh Ya Papi” and Ingrid Michaelson’s “Girls Chase Boys”) has officially crossed over into country.
Role reversal, that trend, drives the video for Maddie and Tae’s buzzworthy debut single “Girl in a Country Song.”
Fitting for a song that criticizes “bro country” for its female objectification, the video puts male actors in the revealing bikini tops, overalls and cut-off jeans typically reserved for the “Girl in a Country Song.”
Not simply about aesthetics, the video also puts the men in the sexualized, subservient roles country “bros” commonly ascribe to women. They dance provocatively. They eat strawberries. They wash cars. They swing from trees. They serve the two singer-songwriters beer. They happily receive slaps on the butt.
