Maddie & Tae’s “Girl in a Country Song” Debuts Well at Radio

No, “Girl in a Country Song” did not erupt the way Kenny Chesney’s “American Kids” or Florida Georgia Line’s “Dirt” did during their impact weeks this summer.

But for a debut single from a young, unproven duo, the buzzworthy release got off to a very solid start at country radio.

According to Mediabase, Maddie and Tae’s debut release “Girl in a Country Song” landed at 34 country stations in conjunction with its official impact this week. Among all reporters, only Luke Bryan’s “Roller Coaster,” which scored 36 adds, had a bigger week.

When only including data from stations monitored by Mediabase, “Girl in a Country Song” actually ranked as the week’s most-added track with 32 pickups. Bryan’s song only pulled 25 adds from the monitored Mediabase panel.

Florida Georgia Line’s “Dirt” ranked as third-most-added on the overall add board with 33 station pickups. Dean Alexander’s new “Live a Little” landed a healthy 29 stations, while Brett Eldredge’s recently released “Mean to Me” ranked as fifth-most-added with new support from 27 stations.

Canaan Smith’s new “Love You Like That” (23 overall adds, 6th-most-added), Lucy Hale’s new “Lie a Little Better” (16 overall adds, 7th), Rascal Flatts’ “Payback” (16 overall adds, 7th), Jerrod Niemann’s “Buzz Back Girl” (13 overall adds, 9th) and Justin Moore’s “Home Sweet Home (featuring Vince Neil)” (13 overall adds, 9th) also had decent weeks at the country format.

Maggie Rose’s “Girl in Your Truck Song,” to which Maddie and Tae’s contrasting “Girl in a Country Song” will be inevitably compared, scored 5 adds this week in advance of its official August 4 impact.

The Maddie and Tae song, which is now supported by 51 stations, is already in the Top 50 on Billboard’s country airplay chart. It sold a healthy 10,230 copies during its first full week of availability for purchase.

Since Mediabase only relies on data from monitored stations in constructing its airplay chart, it is worthy looking at how songs fared with those specific stations this week:

1) Maddie and Tae – Girl in a Country Song – 32 monitored adds
2) Dean Alexander – Live a Little – 29 monitored adds
3) Luke Bryan – Roller Coaster – 25 monitored adds
4) Brett Eldredge – Mean to Me – 23 monitored adds
5) Canaan Smith – Love You Like That – 20 monitored adds
6) Florida Georgia Line – Dirt – 15 monitored adds
6) Lucy Hale – Lie a Little Better – 15 monitored adds
8) Jason Aldean – Burnin’ It Down – 12 monitored adds
8) Rascal Flatts – Payback – 12 monitored adds
10) RaeLynn – God Made Girls – 11 monitored adds
