While it narrowly missed the opening night mark set by its predecessor, “The Purge: Anarchy” parlayed a solid Friday total into a victory at the box office.
The follow-up to “The Purge” drew $13 million in its first day of availability. Down from the $16.8 million earned by the original in 2013, the total was still enough to give “Anarchy” the edge over “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.”
That film, last weekend’s winner, grossed $10.4 million Friday.
New release “Planes: Fire and Rescue” landed in third with a modest $6.3 million. Like the opening night mark for “Anarchy,” that also marked a slight decline from the predecessor’s debut. 2013’s “Planes” earned $8.2 million in its first Friday.
Fellow newcomer “Sex Tape” got off to a limp start Friday. The critically panned reunion of “Bad Teacher” cast members Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel (along with director Jake Kasdan) earned just $5.7 million.
“Transformers: Age of Extinction” landed in fifth with $2.7 million.
