“Tammy” was not the film to end the “Age of Extinction.”
Thanks to receipts of only $21.2 million for the three day weekend and $32.9 million across the five day holiday frame, the new Melissa McCarthy vehicle was unable to dethrone box office champ “Transformers: Age of Extinction.”
The latest “Transformers” release led at the cinemas this weekend with $36.5 million over the past three days and $53.8 million over the last five.
With that haul, the film’s cumulative gross rises to $174.7 million. The strongest for any film released in 2014, that total is nonetheless the lowest ten-day gross for a “Transformers” film since the franchise’s opener launched in 2007.
New release “Deliver Us from Evil” trailed “Tammy” with $9 million over the three day weekend and $15 million over the five day portion. It placed third over both frames.
“22 Jump Street” and “How to Train Your Dragon 2” took fourth and fifth for the three day weekend with $9.4 million and $8.8 million, respectively. The additional $9.4 million sent “22” past the $150 million cumulative mark.
The two films earned $13.9 million and $13.2 million, respectively, over the five days beginning Wednesday.
Sixth for the three day weekend ($8.3 million), new release “Earth to Echo” was fifth over its first five days with $13.5 million.
