“Transformers” Tops “Tammy” in July 4 Box Office Battle

Its haul was down significantly from that delivered on opening night, but “Transformers: Age of Extinction” still had no trouble holding off “Tammy” to claim the number one spot.

“Transformers” earned $10.6 million at the July 4 box office, which gave it a healthy edge over the $6.4 million grossed Melissa McCarthy’s critically panned new comedy. That $10.6 million did, however, represent a staggering drop of 75% from the $41.9 million earned in last Friday’s debut.

Since the five-day holiday weekend commenced on Wednesday, “Transformers” has earned $28.0 million. “Tammy,” meanwhile, has generated $18.2 million in receipts.

“How to Train Your Dragon 2” claimed third place on Friday with $2.8 million in receipts. New releases “Earth to Echo” ($2.6 million) and “Deliver Us from Evil” ($2.5 million) completed the top five.

Since premiering on Wednesday, “Echo” has earned $7.9 million; “Evil” is responsible for $8.0 million in business.
