“Game of Thrones” Finale Ratings Grow But Miss Record

After repeatedly delivering ratings high marks this year, “Game of Thrones” seemed inevitably poised to post a record number for Sunday’s season four finale.

It did not.

Below the 7.2 million viewership high mark posted earlier this year, “GoT” attracted 7.1 million for its finale. While the episode will potentially reach an all-time high audience once repeat airings, streams and on-demand broadcasts are included, it was unable to do so in its initial broadcast.

HBO is already reporting that an additional 2.2 million watched the first two encore broadcasts.

That does not make the news bad. Up 32% from last season’s finale, the audience of 7.1 million also posted this year’s average viewership of 6.8 million.
