Both of the weekend’s sequel releases outperformed their predecessors at the box office, but it was “22 Jump Street” that walks away with a victory.
The acclaimed comedy earned an impressive $60 million to rank number one at the weekend box office. The film’s 2012 predecessor “21 Jump Street” earned $36.3 million.
“How to Train Your Dragon 2,” the weekend’s other sequel, opened to the tune of $50 million. “How to Train Your Dragon,” the film that commenced the series, earned $43.7 million in its March 2010 debut.
The weekend’s other top performers included “Maleficent” (#3, $19.0 million), “Edge of Tomorrow” (#4, $16.2 million) and “The Fault in Our Stars” (#5, $15.7 million).
