Rising Songs: Becky G, Pharrell, Demi Lovato Near Top 40

The subject of Becky G’s new song might have her singing in the “Shower,” but radio programmers are increasingly trying to get listeners to sing it in their cars.

Following two respectable add weeks at radio, Becky G’s “Shower” is flirting with a jump into the Top 40 on Mediabase’s rolling pop radio airplay chart. The track, which has already landed at influential radio stations like Z100, was the 42nd-most-played-song for the seven days ending May 25. Its 877 spins at the pop format represent a healthy gain from the 627 averaged over the previous seven day period.

It might currently be lower, but Pharrell’s “Come Get it Bae” is in the process of an even faster ascent. Thanks to a week-over-week gain of 590 spins, the track jumped to #44 for airplay over the seven days ending May 25. It will soon move past Becky G’s track–and many more tracks–on the chart.

Demi Lovato’s new “Really Don’t Care (featuring Cher Lloyd)” is also starting to build momentum. With a week-to-week increase of 386 spins, the song exploded to #49 on Mediabase’s pop radio airplay chart.

Opportunities should soon emerge for all three songs to enter the top 40. Rapidly declining, Martin Garrix’ #36 song “Animals” and Aloe Blacc’s #40 song “The Man” will soon vacate their places in that portion of the chart. Stuck in neutral, My Crazy Girlfriend’s #41 song “Crazy Stupid Love” will allow for leapfrogging. By virtue of its slow ascent, HAIM’s #39 song “Forever” is also vulnerable to an overtaking.

While none is ascending as rapidly and thus as likely for a Top 40 run as “Shower,” “Come Get it Bae” and “Really Don’t Care,” other tracks within striking distance of the Top 40 include Tiesto’s “Wasted (featuring Matthew Koma)” (#45, +147 spins) and Rita Ora’s “I Will Never Let You Down” (#47, +148 spins).
