“Blended” Moves Past “That’s My Boy,” “X-Men” Wins Box Office

Make no mistake. By Adam Sandler’s career standards, “Blended” flopped at the box office. And if there were anything to the notion that the Sandler-Drew Barrymore pairing carried box office clout, the film’s performance comes as a particular disappointment.

But by picking up the pace on Saturday, “Blended” assured it would not deliver Sandler’s worst opening weekend total in recent memory.

After scoring the worst opening night sum for a signature Sandler comedy since 1996, “Blended” ended up earning $14.2 million for the three days ending Sunday. That gives it the slight edge over the actor’s 2012 release “That’s My Boy,” which grossed just $13.5 million in its first weekend of release.

It did not, however, give “Blended” a first or second place finish. Those respective distinctions went to “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” which earned $90.7 million, and “Godzilla,” which earned $31.4 million.

With its $90.7 million total, “X-Men” posts the fourth-largest opening of the year. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Godzilla” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” all opened to warmer welcomes.

“Neighbors” ($13.9 million) and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” ($7.8 million) closed out the top five this weekend.
