It has a long way to go before becoming the next “Story of My Life,” but One Direction’s follow-up single “You & I” can at least celebrate its early traction.
The ballad, which impacted Top 40 radio this past week, has advanced to number 48 on Mediabase’s rolling Top 40 airplay chart.
The chart, which measures airplay at Mediabase-monitored stations for the seven days ending April 26, says “You & I” garnered 612 Top 40 spins and approximately 2.67 million impressions.
While the song’s traction is admirable, it has nothing on that of Katy Perry’s “Birthday.” Already a format favorite prior to this week’s official impact, the Perry’s song advanced to #26 on Mediabase’s Top 40 airplay chart. Of the songs in the top 50, only Ed Sheeran’s “Sing” (#15) enjoyed a greater increase in spins over the past seven days.
Other Top 40 radio stories:
— John Legend’s “All of Me” continues to reign at #1. No other song is within immediate striking distance of the top spot.
— Paramore’s “Ain’t it Fun” is poised to imminently break the top ten. While Avicii’s #9 “Hey Brother” and Lorde’s #10 “Team” are declining, Paramore’s track was one of the week’s biggest airplay gainers. It should successfully reach the top ten within the next few days.
— Other songs battling for entry into the top ten include Naughty Boy’s “La La La (featuring Sam Smith)” (#12) and Rixton’s “Me and My Broken Heart” (#14). Though farther back at #15, Ed Sheeran’s rapidly-rising “Sing” is an even stronger lock to enter pop radio’s top ten.
— KONGOS’ “Come With Me Now” and MAGIC!’s “Rude” continue venturing up the ladder. They are positioned at #36 and #39, respectively, on the most recent chart.
— Save for an unexpected jump from another track, Afrojack’s “Ten Feet Tall (featuring Wrabel)” will likely be the next to reach the Top 40. It is currently #41 and rising at a faster rate than Christina Perri’s #40 song “Human.” The rapid descent of The Chainsmokers’ “#SELFIE” (#38) will also clear some room in the Top 40.
