Update: ABC’s “Black Box” Delivers Unremarkable Ratings

Update: Not an instant flop in the vein of “Mind Games” or “Lucky 7,” ABC’s “Black Box” nonetheless failed to make a significant impact in the Thursday ratings race.

The premiere episode, which aired out of “Grey’s Anatomy” (2.3 adults 18-49 rating with 7.6 million viewers), delivered a 1.5 rating with 6.6 million viewers.

While its sampling among older viewers was respectable, its demo number represents a significant step down from that typically posted by usual timeslot occupant “Scandal.”

While it might have been competitive in the adults 18-49 demographic, the premiere of ABC’s “Black Box” did not dazzle in the ratings Thursday.

Airing in the Thursday at 10PM slot that normally belongs to “Scandal,” the new series posted a 4.6 overnight household rating.

Neither objectively terrible nor as bad as many of ABC’s dramatic offerings this season, at least as far as overnight household numbers go, it did represent a sizable step down from the numbers routinely delivered by “Scandal.”

Most season 3 “Scandal’ episodes, meanwhile, delivered overnights in the 6.0-7.0 range. Last week’s finale scored a 7.5.

ABC led into “Black Box” with “Grey’s Anatomy.” It posted a 6.0 overnight household rating.
