Take a recognizable brand. Throw in appealing advertisements. Top everything off with rave reviews.
The result? A box office smash.
Benefiting from the aforementioned factors, “The Lego Movie” opened to an impressive $69.1 million at the box office this weekend. More than enough for a number one spot, the total exceeded that of number two finisher “The Monuments Men” ($22.7 million) by a multiple of more than three.
Less fortunate this weekend was the heavily hyped “Vampire Academy.” The latest proof that focusing on vampires does not guarantee a strong box office performance, the film placed seventh for the weekend with a paltry $4.1 million.
Ahead of that film–but behind “Monuments”–were “Ride Along” (#3, $9.4 million), “Frozen” (#4, $6.9 million), “That Awkward Moment” (#5, $5.5 million) and “Lone Survivor” (#6, $5.3 million).
