“The Voice'”s Tessanne Chin Grabs iTunes Number One, Jacquie Lee Chasing

Update: The lack of an iTunes multiplier bonus did not stop “The Voice” fans from supporting the three season five finalists Tuesday morning.

And it definitely did not halt Tessanne Chin fans from making their digital presences felt.

At the close of the voting window, Chin’s “I Have Nothing” and “Let it Be (with Adam Levine)” held the first and fourth slots, respectively, on the overall iTunes single sales chart. Only the former counts towards Chin’s vote, but both underscore the extent to which her final performances resonated with viewers.

Will Champlin’s “(Everything I Do) I Do it For You” and Jacquie Lee’s “And I’m Telling You, I’m Not Going,” both eligible for the weekly iTunes vote, landed at eight and nine, respectively. “Tiny Dancer,” Champlin’s duet with coach Adam Levine, was number ten.

As of the close of voting at 11AM, Monday’s final “The Voice” performances were positioned as follows on iTunes:

1 – Tessanne Chin – I Have Nothing (ineligible for weekly bonus)
3 – Tessanne Chin (w/ Adam Levine) – Let it Be (duet – ineligible for iTunes vote)
8 – Will Champlin – (Everything I Do) I Do it For You (ineligible for weekly bonus)
9 – Jacquie Lee – And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going (ineligible for weekly bonus)
10 – Will Champlin (w/ Adam Levine) – Tiny Dancer (duet – ineligible for iTunes vote)
17 – Tessanne Chin – Try (reprisal – only first time downloads count, ineligible for weekly bonus)
21 – Jacquie Lee (w/ Christina Aguilera) – We Remain (duet – ineligible for iTunes vote)
31 – Jacquie Lee – Back to Black (reprisal – only first time downloads count, ineligible for weekly bonus)
52 – Will Champlin – Not Over You (reprisal – only first time downloads count, ineligible for weekly bonus)

Update: “The Voice'”s convoluted rules document strikes again. According to the official “voting help” page, “There will be no iTunes Bonus available to the artists in connection with voting for the finale episode.”

Though the line does not appear in the corresponding “official voting rules” document, it is believed to be accurate.

As such, Tessanne’s “I Have Nothing” evidently does not qualify for a 5x multiplier by virtue of its ascent into the number one position on iTunes. But in addition to generating a healthy portion of unmultiplied votes, the commercial success optimistically confirms vast interest in her performance.

Update: It took Tessanne Chin roughly three hours to repeat last week’s feat.

As of 1:15AM, Chin’s “I Have Nothing,” her third number during Monday’s final season five “The Voice” performance show, has ascended to number one on the overall iTunes Single Sales chart.

If it maintains its placement in the top ten by the close of voting at 11AM ET, “I Have Nothing” will be subject to a 5x multiplier on its iTunes sales/vote count.

“Let it Be,” Chin’s duet with coach Adam Levine, recently joined “Nothing” in the top ten. Currently number seven, it is not, however, an eligible component of the iTunes vote.

Will Champlin’s similarly ineligible duet “Tiny Dancer,” also with coach Adam Levine, is presently number fourteen. Jacquie Lee’s “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going,” which is included in the weekly vote, is number fifteen.

The complete breakdown of how Monday’s nine performances are faring on iTunes follows:

1 – Tessanne Chin – I Have Nothing
7 – Tessanne Chin (w/ Adam Levine) – Let it Be (ineligible for iTunes vote)
14 – Will Champlin (w/ Adam Levine) – Tiny Dancer (ineligible for iTunes vote)
15 – Jacquie Lee – And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going
18 – Will Champlin – (Everything I Do) I Do it For You
29 – Tessanne Chin – Try (ineligible for weekly bonus)
31 – Jacquie Lee (w/ Christina Aguilera) – We Remain (ineligible for iTunes vote)
41 – Jacquie Lee – Back to Black (ineligible for weekly bonus)
76 – Will Champlin – Not Over You (ineligible for weekly bonus)
====================

iTunes only comprises one element of the voting process for this week’s “The Voice” finale, but it is an element very favorable to Tessanne Chin.

The Team Adam contestant needed less than two hours to return to the top ten of the digital retailer’s single sales chart. By 11:50PM, Chin’s cover of Whitney Houston’s classic ballad “I Have Nothing” had reached number five on the iTunes overall single sales chart.

As long as it remains in the Top Ten through the close of voting at 11AM ET Tuesday–and history suggests it surely will–Chin will receive a 5x multiplier on the song’s iTunes vote (sales) count.

And “I Have Nothing” is not Chin’s only hot seller.

As of press time, “Let it Be,” her duet with coach Adam Levine, was number twelve on the iTunes chart. A sign Chin made an impact during Monday’s final season five performance show, the duet is not, however, an eligible component of the iTunes voting process.

Rival contestant and Team Christina member Jacquie Lee is next on the chart with “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going.” Her number, which closed the show, had reached as high as #24 by 11:50PM.

Ineligible for the iTunes vote, Will’s Champlin’s “Tiny Dancer,” a duet with his coach Adam Levine, followed at #26. His eligible “Everything I Do (I Do it For You),” meanwhile, was number twenty nine at press time.

Thanks to her reprisal on Monday’s show, Tessanne Chin’s “Try” had bulleted back to number 43. Though its tally counts towards her cumulative iTunes vote, it is not independently eligible for the weekly Top 10 bonus (though insofar as it is only at #43, that is likely a moot point).

“We Remain,” Jacquie Lee’s iTunes vote-exempt duet with Christina Aguilera, followed at #45. Her reprised “Back to Black” was #57, besting Will Champlin’s “Not Over You.” That song, his reprisal, had only reached #108 at press time.
