New Music: 1D’s “Story of My Life,” Lady Gaga’s “Venus” Climb Charts

Tuesdays have historically been known as new music release days, but Mondays have recently been providing the more exciting singles chart stories.

Last Monday, new tracks from Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift made quick impacts on the iTunes Single Sales chart. The former two are back this week, but thanks to a new release from One Direction, neither has been able to claim number one.

Outpacing Gaga’s new “Venus” by a pace of 1.7-to-1, 1D’s buzzworthy “Story of My Life” is sitting pretty at number one on the iTunes chart. The song, which draws more from acts like Mumford & Sons and Kodaline than prototypical boy bands, first premiered last Friday to a warm reception from the group’s vast quantity of “Directioners.”

Unable to spark the enthusiasm generated by the 1D release, Gaga’s “Venus” remains an impressive performer. The song, which garnered buzz this weekend when Gaga ended a performance with a complete disrobing, has distance itself from all but “Story” for a comfortable second place.

“Recovery,” Justin Bieber’s latest “Music Mondays” release, has moved less than half as many copies as “Venus” for a third place spot on the iTunes Singles chart. Lorde’s “Royals” and Katy Perry’s “Roar” close out the top five.
