The tandem of Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen electrified few moviegoers Wednesday; their new film “The Guilt Trip” opened to a disappointing box office tally.
It will take until the weekend’s completion to offer a full verdict on the release, but its paltry $1.03 million gross Wednesday should inspire no optimism about its prospects.
The poorly-reviewed mother-son comedy managed second place at the box office, but only as a result of the limited selection Wednesday. After “The Hobbit,” which won the day on $6.3 million in receipts, the next-best performer was “Lincoln” at just $826,000.
To the credit of “Guilt Trip,” it also topped the 3D release of “Monsters, Inc,” which debuted to just $780,000. As a youth-and-family-skewing film, however, “Monsters” might represent a good holiday weekend option; “Guilt Trip” will have to contend with older-skewing fare, including the directly-competitive “This is 40.”
